Our Original Driver Journal Entry - Posted 19/08/2020
20200704_092812.jpg

First test day at Bayford Meadows after 13 years. The old man and my best mate ☝

In a bid to give everbody a bit of insight about myself, guess I'll get involved! 😁

The Beginning....
First name James (After the old man), but everybody calls me by my middle name...Adam (Long story). Where did it all start? Growing up around Motorsport as kid I was either Karting, short oval racing with family, glued to the TV watching F1 or Touring Cars. Thinking about it, playing various kinds of racing games too. I remember as a kid having a go in a Kart on holiday, done pretty well and the bug bit. We started Karting around 1998 quite religiously, spending most weekends getting track time in. Starting off in rental Karts at 'Brentwood Karting' and then progressing onto being an owner driver, in a Zip Cadet some time later. Brentwood was great, though the 'old' track is now gone and has been replaced/upgraded. Here's my short and probably boring story πŸ€ͺ

The Test Day?!
I got the opportunity to go for a test session in a Comer Cadet, at the time with a 2 stroke W60 engine. It was at Rye House, dark...raining..never driven the track before or the class of Kart on offer. Things were nearly called off but the old man assured the fella all will be fine. He was thankfully correct and both myself and Kart left the track in one piece. Great fun and I would imagine a big smile from ear to ear, from myself and the old man.

ZIP Kart, Thanks Mr Karting!

DSC00304.JPG

Circa 1998 I would think - 7/8 years old - What's HD?☝
'Mum & Dad' financed the first Kart and got me into the seat. We bought the ZIP Kart from the late and great Martin Hines, Mr Karting! I remember the day very well still. Such a great fella and really made us feel at home around the shop, nothing was too much bother. A few hand shakes later and a "Enjoy the Kart kid" from Martin, we picked up our first proper taste of Karting. The memories started being created and the legacy began! We was regulars at local tracks such at Rye House and Bayford Meadows. Ended up completing my ARKS test and getting a club license.

The Search For Power!
IMG_0057.JPG

Circa 2001/2002 - 10 / 11 years old ☝
I remember Cadets was great, but I was always heavy. The search for more power a new buzz began! We skipped Mini Max and progressed into Junior Rotax. I remember it was a time where TKM was very much in the forefront of Karting classes and the 'new' Rotax classes were very much up and coming. Being quite young and going out in a Junior Rotax was quite an eye opener, the power felt very much alive and kicking. Again, a great opportunity came up and I test drove a Junior Rotax on an Eglem chassis from the late 'Trackside Karting' at Bayford Meadows. Same again, very apprehensive attitude from all parties involved due to my age. All went well and we ended up getting a new Eglem Chassis and Junior engine. Still no racing? Nope still not entered any races yet. I was always ahead of my classed due to size/weight. Cost was a major issue. And in all honesty I used to love going open practice the day before a race meeting and having such a masterclass in driving from other kids on track. We held our own, good times!

Still Got A Bit Of It :sneaky:
DSC00037.JPG

I still have a caliper from the Eglem Chassis with a picture in it. A great photo frame if you every find the need for one....

Senior Time...
DSC00075.JPG
DSC00082.JPG

Circa 2003/2004 - 12 / 13 years old ☝
Again we jumped a class early, really early! This time I was getting a few coaching sessions from a fella (I can't remember the name, so sorry) and we opted to go for one of their ex race engines and a new 'Go Kart' chassis. They had a workshop in Leyton, East London which was right on our doorstep. It was a nice Kart, but I did prefer the Eglem. Anyways, another learning curve with the Rotax Senior. Still not racing due to being too young for the class and financial restrictions. But still holding our own and having a blast! Turning a few heads and up turning some eyebrows for all the right reasons on occasion.

Sold Up!
IMG_0014.JPG

Circa 2006 / 2007 - 15 / 16 years old ☝
Sold. As I got older I found myself getting a part time job, going out with 'mates' and in general not having time for Karting. We had a good run and it was time to move on. Karting kept me on the straight and narrow as kid. Some of my best memories was from the days of Karting.

Fast Forward >> 2019
20181105_162421.jpg
20190330_193538.jpg

2019 - Old :( ☝
At 17 life moves on and I really got into my cars, owning various things over the years. Fast forward a few years and I bought my dream car around 2012, a Ford Focus ST225. I loved it, it was my pride and joy. After 7 years of owning it and making some great friends and going to many many shows and meets. The time had come, back to Karting we go. I can confirm 300bhp and Karting are very different, but once you get the Karting bug you will NOT loose it. It's their for life. Car got sold. Tears all round.

Snapped!
FB_IMG_1571613316885.jpg

2019 - Bayford ☝
What made me go back to Karting? The smell, the buzz, the memories....my little ones. Oh and Paul Babington's snap above . We went to a few meetings at Bayford to watch...it all come flooding back. Long story short; I got home and Paul snapped my little one looking over at another little one in a Bambino. I wanted to make the some memories I had as a kid, with my kids. Car sold. Workshop built with the old man. Kart bought. Soon we swap the scooter for a Bambino too kid!

2019 - The internet ☝
Upon trying to get back into Karting I noticed there was a void for something new, fresh and unique. KartingForum.co.uk was born! You get what that's all about, you're here right?!

The Return!
20200701_223403.jpg

2020 - Super secret headquaters ☝
Started off again where we left off! With the car gone it allowed me to go ahead and own a fantastic example of a Tony Kart with a Senior Rotax from NextKarting (Great firm, highly recommended). J. A. Pell & Son Motorsport was born! Since we have been out on the track for a few sessions and getting back into the swing of things. If I can get into some club racing next year at Bayford and Lydd, I'd be over the moon! For now we (I lol) concentrate on dropping some timber and getting some consistant times. Race craft is still back there somewhere, but I have so much to forget in terms of bad habits. It seems to hurt more now at 29 than it did as a kid too? πŸ€”

Where From Here...The Legacy
IMG-20200801-WA0033.jpg

2020 - Happy place, Bayford ☝
Well as far as I'm concerned KartingForum.co.uk is here to stay and help people and the industry where possible. Maybe in 5 years I'm going to look back and say 'Good effort, but no trophy'. But as I have proven, you can make some wicked memories without winning a trophy, it just depends on who you wish to share that journey with. I'm here to help anybody where I can, so please contact me/the forum if that's possible. We'll see how things go and I thank you all for getting onboard with this little project.

Karting wise, I intend to get in shape and become some what competitive again. Club races next year? I hope so. I also want to get my little ones into Karting if they wish to, we'll see when the time comes.

Well, that's my journey spanning the last 20 years and with loads more to come! Big thanks to all that was a good influence and assistance over the years, great times! I'll keep this thread updated with all the latest happenings and goals. I'm sure I will update this post at some point, bound to be a typo or something I have missed.

Welcome to my Driver Journal......

A massive shout out to Grice Racing Engines for the new power plant! A great service from start to finish, highly recommended. What an epic difference in power delivery, very impressed! Knocking a massive 4 tenths off our PB first session out in Quali with a month out the seat, the day started off very well!

Qualifying
BAB_1178.jpg
Started with quite big changes to the Kart and not a lot of confidence in driving ability, no testing or seat time in a month. However we was quite up beat due to the engine and was looking forward to the day. We managed a respectable P6 and managed a new PB. Happy days!

Weigh in showed we have lost 1kg since the last meeting, so hoping for another kilo to be banished by next meeting. Progress!

IMG-20210816-WA0009.jpg

Stretchy stretchy....what a photo lol.

Pre Final 1 & 2
BAB_1191.jpg

Both Pre Final 1 and 2 showed decent pace and a solid performance from the Kart. P5 x2 gave us some decent results to be happy with.

Some great competitive battles out on track and the race craft is for sure coming back. Every meeting it seems I can pick up some time on various parts of the track, so progress is slow but steady.

The Final
Yet again great fun and some great battles out on the track. Our pace slipped a little bit, I believe due to tyre pressures. Checking the times we didn't get slower and showed consistent pace, but everybody else got quicker!? Something we have now learned and can implement next time out, more testing needed.

Engine was still pulling very well and we managed to finish P8! Much more work needed by myself on the starts, it seems I give up too many places on the starts, elbows out next time lads! But, least we made it to the end. Another great day out racing with the fellow lads on track as always.

An epic drive by @Billywatts and @Gibby who started from the back and made their way through the field. Tom is flying as always. And some great battles with Dennis! And well done the boys from Lydd and the other new comers....I reckon those novice plates were on to play mind games with us all πŸ˜… :giggle:

I'm off to order some spare rad brackets.....πŸ™ƒπŸ˜

Yay 2 wheels!

BAB_3512.jpg

Qualifying
Well quali didn't really go to plan at all, we was for sure short on pace. However, I felt good and the Kart felt really good too. I can only put it down to ME! We was hoping for mid to late 48's but ended up with a 49.021, a few tenths off our goal which put us P6. I came off knowing it wasn't great, but was hoping for better than that. Engine feels so much more stronger after Grice done their thing. I think we now have gearing, fuel and tyre pressures correct. Still need to loose a leg in weight though....

BAB_3813.jpg

Flappy flap....

Pre final 1 & 2
Epic start for us in Pre Final 1, one of our best yet. We managed to follow @Billywatts through some traffic and got to a nice P4. Time keep my cool and get my head down and get going, tight lines...tight lines lol. A nice little battle with Gary Clarke (I Think?!) after a few laps (Epic little battle fella for those few corners) see me make a big mistake into Rise/Turn 10 trying to out break Gary see me lock the rears and bog right down out the bend. That then allowed Gary back by and a few other Karts. Causing us to finish P8. One mistake.

Pre Final 2 was a decent start too! We managed to finish P6 after a very tense battle with Andy Locke and Josh Constable hot on my heels. Great fun racing, very close. Lovee it!

BAB_3522.jpg
BAB_3824.jpg

Grand Final
See us finish P6 so we held our own! At one point got up to P5 with a free +1 due to a spin from @Gibby . But with outstanding driving and pace he caught back up and overtook us.

Currently sitting 6th in the championship with 2 round missed at the start of the season. So for our first proper season racing, I reckon we're not doing too bad.

Great driving from all your lads all day really, well done to everybody. Really excited for R7 now. We just need to find a few more tenths back again for the next round.

Big thanks to Paul Babington Photography for the snaps as always! Thanks to the Old Man, Mrs and Kids for coming to support. Thanks to everybody at Bayford Meadows for what they do as always.

Quali

New tyre round! No testing from last race weekend due to other commitments but we was well happy to get back out there and give it our best. Clearly need more testing on new tyres, setting our best time on lap 4 but not really pushing till lap 6. Guess we missed the window!? @Billywatts absolutely flying with a pole lap 1 whole second faster than us. Missed P7 by 0.04, P6 by 0.36.

BAB_4831.jpg
BAB_5631.jpg

Not all is lost, had a good session and came in with a big smile as we smashed our previous new tyre PB by over 2 tenths. Giving us a 48.23 as our new PB, so now we chase a late 47, which is clearly the next step and where we need to be to stay somewhat competitive. Progress!

Pre final 1 & 2
Good battles with Andy Locke all day, great fun. Various mistakes made on track by myself see us have a really hard few heats. But most enjoyable still. It felt like a real slog just to get some decent results, everybody has got faster so we'll have to continue to up our game.

BAB_5173.jpg

Grand Final
Not a great starting position at all, didn't expect much. However a consistent drive and some good luck our way see us finish P5. Reliability seems to be great for us at the moment, which has seen us pick up some decent points due to just finishing! Finishing the day with our 2nd best scoring round so far, our best being our first round. Happy days! + a new PB!

It seems more testing on new tyres is needed for sure. Quali with us being 1 second behind pole man, by the final the gapped closed to us being just over half a second behind pole man. More work needed. Oh and loose more weight, air pie and bike work for me this month again!

Quali P8 (+NEW PB!) - Pre Final 1 P6 - Pre Final 2 P8 - Grand Final P5!

Meeting Summary

We entered quali with high hopes of a decent results, I guess we managed to achieve that. I was hoping for a few tenths quicker, but we done our best.

BAB_7318.jpg

Pre Final 1 see us having some good battles and keeping a steady pace in P5. @Billywatts sneaking up the inside like a ninja dropped us to P6. Then a last attempt lunge from Daniel Wright put the kart up in the air on the last corner of the last lap, dropping us to P7. Then from some unknown reason Daniel Wright it seemed hit the brakes on the in-lap (Could of been my fault, if it was I apologise), giving us a drop nose giving us P8 . Frustrated to say the least but oh well, it's racing. Learned a few things - onwards and upwards!

BAB_8065.jpg

Pre Final 2 saw us start P8 and finish P6. Some great fair battles with @Andy locke and Graham Heard. Lap after lap giving each other just 'that' much space. So much fun! One of the best heats/races this season we've had racing and fun wise.

BAB_7703.jpg

BAB_7694.jpg

Grand Final we started in P6 and finished P6. kept a steady pace until about half way through a lunge across the kerb from (I can't even remember who lol) sent the kart sideways and spun us out. Thankfully we managed to finish P6 jusssst ahead of a fast approaching @Andy locke .

BAB_8088.jpg

All ended well in the end, we had great fun even with some bad luck thrown our way. But, that's just racing. Looking forward to getting back out there with everybody next meeting.
